Hangzhou’s Tourism Bureau launched the competition in March 2013, offering China’s Dream Job for an Euro 40,000 salary. Basically, Hangzhou offers a year-long employment contract for an ambassador that will have a 15-day expense-paid tour of the city –  includes Hangzhou’s tea, silk, traditional medicines, the art of sigillography (seal and chop-making) and martial arts – and will be “the New Marco Polo”, to follow the legacy of the legendary Venetian explorer that, back in the days, called Hangzhou city “beyond dispute the finest and the noblest in the world”.

The entries were made on a special Facebook page and the pre-selection lasted a year. From the 7 initially selected finalist, only 5 reached the finals – an Australian, a Swiss, an American, a French and a Romanian.

The ambassador will be selected by a jury, but the public vote on Facebook matters in order to show candidate’s power to mobilize and gather attention in social media.

Before moving to Thailand, Brad Florescu worked in advertising and accumulated 13 years of experience in the field. Passionate by travel, Brad decided to make a change and move to Thailand, where he writes about travel and people’s way of living on Tedoo.ro and Thailander.eu.

Before deciding to make a living from writing about travel, Brad was, over the time, communication strategy coordinator for Realitatea-Catavencu group, Executive Director and Strategy Director at DDB Bucharest, Creative Director Media Pro and Creative Director Tempo.
