Ecommerce Europe: Western European e-commerce market to reach € 204.7BN in 2014
Ecommerce Europe – European umbrella organization for 25.000+ companies, selling products and/or services online to consumers – recently published a report according to which Western European B2C e-commerce market is developing extremely well, with online sales estimated to reach Euro 204.7 BN by the end of 2014.
Western Europe – comprising Belgium, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom – is in first position with regard to e-commerce size in 2013, with a European market share of 49%. The total B2C e-commerce economy of Western Europe was of Euro 177.7BN, up 12% compared to 2012. In 2014, online sales of goods and services are estimated to reach Euro 204.7Bn, up 15% compared to last year. Also, Ecommerce Europe’s research also reveals that 95 million consumers in Western Europe bought goods and services online in 2013.
The mature online markets of Western Europe are UK, France and Netherlands. UK leads the way with total online sales of Euro 107.1BN and is estimated to keep its leadership also in 2014 (with forecast total sales of Euro 127.4BN), with France and Netherlands following (Euro 57.5BN and, resectively, Euro 11.5BN forecast for 2014). Next are Ireland (estimated Euro 5.2BN in 2014), Belgium (Euro 4BN) and Luxembourg (Euro 529M).
According to the report, the average Western European e-shopper spent Euro 1,867 online in 2013, far above the European average of Euro 1,376 and EU28 average of Euro 1,500. Brits spent the most (Euro 2,614), followed by Irish, Luxembourgers and French (Euro 1,643, Euro 1,533 and Euro 1,503).
