Sci-Tech Challenge 2019 Romania: 5 people from Constanta to represent the country in the European competition
Five creative pupils from Constanta qualified in the European final of the Sci-Tech Challenge 2019 competition, organized by Junior Achievement Europe with the support of ExxonMobil. At the seventh edition in Romania, the competition encourages the young people to apply their knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and to develop their creativity and entrepreneurial skills.
102 pupils from Constanta took part in the competition’s national finale where they were challenged to create a modernizing plan for Brussels’ transport network, by offering some fast, efficient and accessible mobility options for all citizens and with a reduced negative impact over the environment.
The winning team convinced the jury through the solution’s creativity and feasibility to the work theme, by proposing the implementation of a complex plan that was following the key-elements (the reduction of the CO2 emissions, comfort for the travelers, reduced energy consumption, intelligent traffic light system); the use of authorized hybrid double-decked buses, electric cable cars, dynamo bicycles, aeolian turbines for the metro tunnels, parking spots in the outlying areas and an innovating app – Together for better (TFB) – that combines all the city’s traffic options.
The pupils from Constanta that will represent Romania at the European final are: Andreea Maria Chiriac, Vanessa Emily Herdean, Mihaela Cristina Consferenț, Răzvan Bucur, Bianca Maria Baias.
The national event attracted 12 high schools from Constanta, with pupils passionate by science, technology and entrepreneurship. They were put in teams in no particular order, interacted and put to value their knowledge, creativity and presentation skills. Throughout the competition they were mentored by eight volunteers of the from the company ExxonMobil Romania, that offered them explanations and pieces of advice regarding the technical,financial aspects and also some marketing elements related to their projects.

The European final of the Sci-Tech Challenge 2019 competition will take place in Brussels during May 14 – 15th. The pupils from Constanta will compete against the winners in the other participating countries: Belgium, Italy and Holland.
