Romania: Reverse PET adds tech and rewards to recycling

An innovative app transforming recycling into an easy and rewarding activity, Reverse PET, was recently launched on Romanian market.

The app makes available a modern and convenient solution to recycle plastic bottles (PET), cans or glass bottles that bear the recycling symbol (SGR). Users are rewarded for each collected bottle and, via the app, they can request for PETs to be collected from their home, can see the accumulated points and turn them into money.

App’s development was inspired by the Retour Guarantee System (SGR), which is not only facilitating recycling, but also promotes a culture of responsibility towards environment among Romanians.

According to data published by Romanian business newspaper Capital, in June, from a total of 694M recipients on the market, 347M were recycled via ReturRo system.

The app is available free both for Android and IoS. Users can download the app and, if they want to hand over bottles, they just need to make an account with the e-mail. Then they can enter in the app the number of bottles with SGR symbol they want to hand over and the address where the bottles have to be picked up. The people who do this (recyclers) will receive 0.20RON for each recycled bottle.

In the same time, the app will also register users who want to pick up the bottles (collectors) from those mentioned above. They will get 0,25 RON for each recycled bottle or more, depending on recycling centers’ campaigns.

The app will withhold 0,05 RON from each bottle to be able to support the maintenance and development costs.
